Selecting Ergonomic Office Furniture for Employee Health and Productivity
Investing in Staff Well-being
Ergonomics—the study of designing equipment and workspaces for maximum comfort and efficiency—is a key factor in reducing sick days, back pain, and repetitive strain injuries. Quality ergonomic furniture is an investment in long-term employee productivity.
Ergonomic Essentials
- **Adjustable Chairs:** Chairs must have adjustable height, lumbar (lower back) support, and armrests. The user’s feet should rest flat on the floor, and the back should be supported in a natural S-shape.
- **Desk Height:** The desk height should allow the keyboard and mouse to be used with the wrists straight, keeping the elbows at approximately a 90-degree angle.
- **Monitor Placement:** The top of the computer screen should be at or slightly below eye level, and the screen should be about an arm’s length away. This prevents neck strain and headaches.
- **Sufficient Lighting:** Ensure workspaces have adequate, glare-free lighting to minimize eye strain.
Do not compromise on staff seating. Poor chairs lead directly to health problems and reduced focus.
